Quick Garbage Disposal Help

It wont turn on!
Many times we will get calls from clients who believe they need to replace their garbage disposal only to find they have tripped the reset switch from a power shortage or maybe your breaker to that area has switched. This happens a lot during the holidays with all the hustle and bustle in the kitchen, all those toasters and electric knives may have put your breaker over the edge! So (1) check the breaker to the area and (2) check the reset button. The reset button can usually be found on the bottom of your disposal.

It turns on but the blades don’t move!
DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT put your hand in or near the disposal area! It is possible something is jamming the blades. An option is to turn OFF the disposal, use something that wont bend the blades, maybe a wooden spoon, and ever so slightly feel around for anything blocking the blades from moving. (bones from food are a very common occurrence). Also the top of a broom handle can work. After freeing up the blades turn on and run water for about 15 seconds to make sure it is clear. IF YOU MUST get something from inside the unit use a pair of pliers but never use your hand.

It still is not working!
At this point it is a good idea to call a professional. Also you don’t want to risk injuring yourself or anything around you by being too aggressive with the machine. Luckily if you are in the East Bay Area (Pleasanton, Dublin, Livermore, San Ramon, Danville, Alamo, Diablo, Sunol) we know of a Plumbing company that can help!
